Garlic Onion Dip (D is for Dairy Free)

Dairy free Soy free Vegan Garlic Onion Dip using Daiya Cream Cheese Spread

I've been eyeing the Daiya cream cheese spread in my fridge for a while.  Ever since it first appeared at the grocery store, I've always kept a tub or two in the fridge.  Usually, we smear it on (gluten free) bagels.  Sometimes, I add it to mashed potatoes for some extra creaminess.  Luke even used it to make filling for Tiramisu.

(Follow the link.  Go make it.  It's amazing. Someday, Luke will make some girl fall in love with him because he can make this from scratch.)

Lately, I've been wondering if I could use it to make a holiday dip. Since this week of Blogging Through the Alphabet's theme is the letter D, it seemed the perfect time to head to the kitchen and experiment.

I've missed onion dip with chips, but I refuse to make it with dairy sour cream because it's not safe for the kids. When we have large parties, I really try to make everything safe for them to eat, so I don't have to worry about what bowl they got their food from or if spoons got mixed up.  The usual "dairy allergy" work-around is to use a soy-based version of sour cream, but that doesn't work here, either.  My kids couldn't make it that easy, now could they?  They're allergic to soy, too! I wondered if I could make a dip that used the cream cheese instead of sour cream.  The answer: Yes.  I'm thankful to have another allergy-friendly dish to add to our Thanksgiving table.

Dairy Free Garlic-Onion Dip

1  8 oz tub Daiya cream cheese spread
1/2 cup caramelized onions
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp coconut aminos
salt and pepper to taste

Place everything in a mixing bowl, and combine.

 How easy is that?

You can serve it right away, but it tastes better if you can refrigerate it for an hour or so.  Otherwise, the garlic is a bit harsh; letting this dip set gives it time to mellow.

Serve with crackers or (my favorite) crinkle-cut potato chips.
